Workers aged 55 and older accounted for 19% of the U.S. workforce in 2009 compared to 12 percent in 2003. They comprise the fastest-growing segment of the working population according to federal officials. This means that work related injuries among older workers will continue to rise. Although these workers do not have an increased risk of injury overall compared to younger workers, they are at a higher risk of suffering more serious injuries. Fractures and hip injuries are seen more commonly in older workers for falls from stairs, ladders and heights.
